153 km southeast of Galle and 270 km from Colombo. Better known as Tissa, this small town in the middle of rice fields is dominated by the immaculate silhouette of several dagobas, including the Tissamaharama Vihara. The town is one of the preferred starting points for excursions to Yala (Ruhuna) National Park. However, one can take advantage of the quietness of the city to walk around or get up early to go bird watching on the shores of Tissa Lake or in the Wirawila Bird Sanctuary, on the northwestern edge of the city. Beware of swimming in Tissa Lake: crocodiles are very present here, as the many warning signs remind us.
