Ah, the beach at last! The coastline so envied by Sri Lanka is this one. While locals know that their best beaches are in the east, everyone outside the island agrees that the southern coasts are the best. It must be said that the east has been in constant conflict for over 20 years...depending on the period, Tamil terrorists are gaining or losing ground. We advise you to check with the tourist office before going anywhere as the situation changes all the time. This year it is the Yala National Park which has just closed because of the attacks which took place there in the last few months. The South is not at all affected by these clashes and remains a paradise for tourists. The long stretches of white sand bordered by coconut palms along their entire length, translucent water, the smiles of the inhabitants, ideal temperatures, everything combines here harmoniously to spend a dream holiday.

However, not all beaches are the same: the west coast between Colombo and Bentota will disappoint you. Similarly, very touristic resorts such as Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna or Tissamaharama must be approached with vigilance. Follow our advice for these cities, especially for Hikkaduwa and Bentota. In short, once you know what to expect, you have plenty to satisfy your desires: authenticity, party or relaxation, guesthouse or grand hotel, mangroves or national parks, you will find everything on this coast. Ayubowan!
