SNOW CAVE (SNEZNA JAMA)

Natural Crafts

This cave was discovered in 1981. It is in fact a cooler where the snow, accumulated during the winters, came down from the surface along faults and was transformed into ice by settling. It is believed to be over 10 million years old. Inside, the temperature is almost constant and never rises above 4°C. Stalagmites sometimes exceed 20 m in height. This is the highest cave in Slovenia, at an altitude of 1,530 m.

One admires the courage of the few intrepid climbers who have overcome this extreme difficulty, which is still some 40 m high.
