Mactan island, renamed Lapu-Lapu in honor of the national hero, is the island you'll land on if you arrive in Cebu City by plane. Lapu-Lapu doesn't have much appeal, but it can be a convenient place to spend the night if you have a flight the next day. Around the bend of an ordinary road: Mactan Newtown, a sort of futuristic district that seems to have sprung straight out of the ground. State-of-the-art buildings, wide sidewalks, quiet roads, flamboyant lobbies of hotels and residences, squeaky-clean restaurants... you've landed in another world. Lunar.
