Calauit, north of Busuanga, is home to the Calauit Safari Park, which covers 3,700 ha. This African-style safari was created in 1976 by dictator Marcos, who, during a trip to Kenya, wanted "to have the same animals". So 8 species were imported from Africa: giraffe, impala, zebra, gazelle, water buffalo, tupi, antelope and billy goat. Some species, like the antelopes, have already become extinct. Others are still alive. And as one controversy often hides another, President Marcos dislodged the Tagbanwa tribe to settle these animals. Today, the Tagbanwa are still trying to reclaim their land and cohabit with these animals.
