A true paradise between land and sea, Busuanga Island is the economic center of the Calamianes group. This small archipelago anchored at the northern tip of Palawan is made up of four islands - Busuanga, Coron, Culion and Calauit - plus a further ninety islets. The only town is Coron on the east coast of Busuanga (and not on the island of Coron, as you might expect). This is where most of the hotels, inns, restaurants and tour operators are concentrated. Busuanga Island is also home to the airport. Since its expansion in 2014, the number of flights from Manila and Cebu, among others, has multiplied. As a result, numerous hotel projects have opened in Coron in recent years, attracting more and more visitors to what had previously remained a veritable natural paradise untouched by mass tourism. Busuanga Island is also home to the Yulo ranch, which is said to contain Asia's largest herd of cattle on an area of over 40,000 hectares; it belonged to Commander Marcos before becoming the property of the Philippine government. Fishing, farming and handicrafts are the main activities of the island's inhabitants. The town of Coron is the departure point for island hopping and expeditions to remarkable diving sites, such as Apo Reef or the Japanese wrecks sunk in 1944 under attack by American forces. The more down-to-earth can choose to explore the island by scooter. The island's interior in particular is breathtakingly undeveloped. You'll pass through vast expanses of grazing cattle, and at the end of the day, mist shrouds the mountains in mystery. A beautiful getaway away from it all.
