NAZARÉ BASÍLICA
Basilica with marble altar, granite columns, French stained glass and mosaic medallions
This basilica, built in 1909, is a departure from Salvador's Baroque buildings. It was inaugurated in 1923. The doors are in bronze, the altar in marble. The interior features stained glass windows made in France and mosaic medallions in an almost Byzantine style.
The Círio de Nazaré is the center of the great October pilgrimage. Every year, on the second Sunday in October, the image of the Virgin of Nazareth, which legend has it was found in the 18th century, sets off from Belém Cathedral towards the Basilica, followed by two million people.
