The Theatro da Paz is a venerable establishment built in 1878, during the "rubber cycle" that brought an economic boom to the entire Amazon region. Belém, then considered the "rubber capital", still lacked a theater capable of staging operas. The provincial government hired military engineer José Tiburcio de Magalhães, who designed a theater inspired by Milan's La Scala. The "Theatro" still stages operas and concerts by the Belém orchestra in its 900-seat auditorium.
