PRAÇA DA INDEPENDÊNÇIA
Independence Square with English locomotive, a reminder of Britain's importance to the local economy in the century
The Praça da Independênçia, with its English locomotive, is a concentrate of the city's history. It is a reminder of the importance of Great Britain to the local economy in the 19th century. Construction of the square began on May 15, 1915 and was inaugurated on December 24, 1917, under the administration of Eugênio Cunha. It has undergone a number of restructurings. Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, the pavement was resurfaced and a Portuguese mosaic floor with motifs from the indigenous Kadiwéu culture was installed.
