A must-see, Porto Alegre's Mercado Público, the city's oldest market, is certainly more than just a market. This handsome building dating from 1869 has a pleasant yellow façade and a metal roof inside, housing over 110 stalls. It's a meeting place for locals and a great place to see the city. You can buy food, maté, cuia and bomba to prepare your chimarrão at home. For fans of local folklore, you can buy typical gaucho clothing.
