The city's eponymous fort was built in 1812. The Nossa Senhora da Assunção fortress marked the beginning of the history of Ceará's capital. The first fort was built by the Dutch in 1649. In 1654, following the expulsion of the Dutch from Brazil, the Portuguese regained possession of this strategic location. The fortress was subsequently rebuilt in the 19th century, with additions and repairs, and renamed Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
