The Casa da Cultura is an astonishing building that housed a prison until 1973. It was built in the shape of a cross to facilitate surveillance of all the cells. Today, it houses a vast commercial and craft complex. Numerous small souvenir and craft stores (of varying quality) have been set up in the former cells, along with art galleries and folklore presentations. Next door, the former Recife Central Station (1888) houses the Train Museum and the metro terminus.
