It's a pleasant, bucolic district where you can admire colorful 19th-century houses and sobrados built by the vacationing bourgeoisie. At the time, it was a tiny village with just a few houses. Doctors began advising members of the wealthiest families to go there, as the Capibaribe river flowed there and was thought to have medicinal properties. Recife's wealthy families began to build sobrados. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde (1820) can also be seen here.
