SÃO JOSÉ MARKET
The mercado de São José immerses visitors in the daily life of the working-class Recife. Designed by French architects, the iron market in the São José district was directly inspired by the Grenelle market. It was inaugurated in 1875, and today boasts over 500 stalls selling a wide variety of products: handicrafts, medicinal herbs, cashew nuts and more. It's always a pleasant place to stroll around and get lost before returning to the Patio de São Pedro. But beware: when the market closes, the district empties and becomes unsafe.
