Anthropologist and sociologist Gilberto Freyre is best known for his seminal work Maîtres et Esclaves , which deciphers the complex social structures of Brazilian colonial society. The museum is housed in his large estate in the Apipucos district, where Gilberto Freyre lived for over 40 years. This former 19th-century "Casa Grande" was converted into a museum in 1987. It features exhibits of ethno-anthropological, artistic and literary interest.
