The Estrada Real, or "Royal Road", is a road paved with ashlars, the result of hard labor imposed on slaves in 1726. This road linked Rio de Contas to the small town of Livramento de Nossa Senhora. Like the gold route linking Ouro Preto to Paraty, this royal road was used to transfer gold from the Chapada mines to Salvador de Bahia, capital of the Portuguese crown colony. The walk lasts three hours and is fairly easy, in very pleasant surroundings. You can swim in the waterfalls.
