PRAÇA TOMÉ DE SOUZA
Square in Salvador's historic center, home to all the public buildings of the nascent Brazilian colony
Praça Tomé de Sousa (known as "Praça Municipal") is a square in Salvador's historic center, where the city's administration was founded. It was here, in the 16th century, that Brazil's first governor, Tomé de Sousa, assembled all the public buildings of the nascent Brazilian colony. Today, you can see the Palácio Tomé de Sousa (now the seat of the Prefecture), the Palácio Rio Branco (once the seat of Bahia's government), Salvador City Hall and a statue of Brazil's first governor. From here, access to the Elevador Lacerda.
