FORTE DE SÃO MARCELO
Fort off the lower town, used to defend the town from foreign attacks and converted into a prison in the century
Formerly called Forte de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo and better known as Forte do Mar, the Forte de São Marcelo stands off the coast of the lower town. Erected on a reef in the early 17th century, it was originally made of wood and was rebuilt in stone in its present form after the Dutch invasion of 1624. Over the centuries, it served to defend the town from foreign attack, and was converted into a prison in the 18th century. The fort cannot be visited. However, you can get close to it by taking a ferry to the islands in the area.
