This beautiful neo-Manueline building is a tribute to Iberian architecture and a landmark of Portuguese culture.

It is the Bahian equivalent of the Portuguese reading room in Rio. This beautiful neo-Manuelan style building is a tribute to Iberian architecture. For more than a century, it has also been a focal point of Portuguese culture in Bahia, with a library and many books by Portuguese authors. It was the members of the Portuguese community in Salvador who founded a "literary society" with the aim of writing literary works in Portuguese and French.
