This ancient symbolic pillory is one of three remaining in Brazil, along with Salvador de Bahia and São Luís do Maranhão.
The history of colonial Brazil is inextricably linked to the imprescriptible crime against humanity that was the slave trade. It was the blood of men torn from Africa that made the country's fortune. This old pillory, where recalcitrant or brown slaves were tied up and tortured, is one of the three remaining pillories in Brazil, along with those in Salvador de Bahia and São Luís do Maranhão. Symbolically, it stands in front of the town hall-prison, an expression of the power of the Portuguese masters. Like many sculptures in the region, this pillory is made of soapstone.
