CATEDRAL BASILICA DA SÉ
Church in the purest Mineiro Baroque style, with a modest, sober architectural design, seen from the outside.
Built in the first half of the 18th century and inaugurated in 1760, it is the oldest church in the city. Its interior is richly decorated by Aleijadinho and Manuel da Costa Ataide, in the purest Mineiro Baroque style. Better known as the Cathedral of Mariana, its main wealth lies in the interior decoration, which has one of the most sophisticated sets of sculptures from the colonial period carved in wood with instruments such as the chisel.
From the outside, the Sé has a modest and sober architectural design, reminiscent of some Jesuit buildings on the Brazilian coast, which were less rich than in the colonial period. Above the entrance portal, two windows with balconies and parapets appear, and just above, the two towers for the bells.
The superb architectural decoration of the main chapel highlights the high level of refinement achieved by Minas Gerais architects in the mid-18th century. One of the attractions is the German Arp Schnitger organ, built in 1701 and installed in 1753. The main altar is decorated with a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in its center. The side altars in the nave, with the exception of that of Santa Barbara, are in the same style as the main altar, with decorative details such as the Atlantis (a statue of a man). These altars are dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, St. Peter, St. Francis, Lord of the Marches and to Saints Barbara, Luzia and Antonio.
