This former working theater was an important part of daily life at the time.
The Opera House of Vila Rica, today the Teatro Municipal de Ouro Preto, is the oldest active theatre on the continent. It was built in 1769 by João de Souza Lisboa and inaugurated on June 6, 1770, the birthday of King José I. The emperors Dom Pedro I and II had a box in front of the stage.
The theatre was a very present element in the daily life of the time. Every celebration was a great spectacle and the theatre was the most appropriate way to express the pomp, opulence and glory of the powerful nobility of the 18th century.
