The Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Pilar is the spectacular church of the Pilar district, in the lower town of Ouro Preto. It was built between 1711 and 1733. In addition to the incredible amount of gold in its central altar (more than 400 kg in total!), the richness of the ornaments, gilding and woodwork make the Basilica do Pilar the best example of Brazilian Baroque. With the São Francisco church, it is the other must-see visit of the city. Museum of Sacred Art in the basement.
