MUSEU HISTÓRICO NACIONAL
Museum in the port district, with an inner courtyard ideal for admiring a collection of cannons from the to the century
In the port district, this museum was created in 1922 to commemorate the centenary of Brazil's independence and is one of the largest in Brazil, with an area of 20,000 m² and more than 270,000 objects. It is a rare opportunity to better understand the history of Brazil, from colonization to the beginnings of the Republic (The republican period of Brazilian history, which began in 1889, can be discovered in the Palace of the Republic, in Catete), both through its building, its works and its constant exhibitions.
The museum is housed in a former fort that contained the king's artillery; it has an inner courtyard where one can admire a superb collection of cannons from the 16th to the 19th century. Note that some cannons are decorated with carved heads of mythological origin as the French used to do.
The carriage room is rich and reminds us that before the arrival of the Emperor in 1808, transportation in Rio was not very advanced: narrow roadway, little light and no one to clean the streets. In 1808, the King of Portugal arrived with 20,000 people from the court and 40 luggage vehicles, and undertook a lot of work to improve the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The military room offers a collection of military uniforms from different periods as well as firearms, swords and paintings of Don Pedro II, the naval battle of Riachuelo and the terrible war against Paraguay in the 19th century.
