215-step staircase, a tribute to the Brazilian people, decorated with azulejos by Chilean painter Jorge Selarón

In 1990, the Chilean painter Jorge Selarón, in homage to the Brazilian people, embarked on the Grande Locoura (the Great Madness): painting and decorating the stairs of a whole street, between Santa Teresa and Lapa. Taken by passion by the azulejos, he then sets about covering the 215 steps of this staircase with them. The tiles come from all over the world, sent by visitors who fell in love with this work, or gleaned by the artist himself. An ideal stop at the end of your visit to Santa Teresa, it will take you to the rua Joaquim Silva, in Lapa.

Quel travail !
