Formerly Museu Histórico e Diplomático. A superb example of neoclassical architecture, the Itamaraty Palace, completed in 1854, was home to the Presidency of the Republic from 1889 to 1897 and then to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1899 to 1970. The museum, which is now closed, used to be accessible. The archives contain nearly 6 million documents dating back to 1808. The map library has a collection of more than 30,000 maps, atlases and globes. The library houses nearly 160,000 volumes, as well as a newspaper collection of more than 1,500 titles.
