The city's first skyscraper, 22 storeys high and 102 m tall, on the Plaça Maúa, designed by French architect Joseph Gire
Built in the late 1920s in Mauá Square, the city's first skyscraper, nicknamed "A Noite" ("at night"), has 22 floors and is 102 metres high. Designed by the French architect Joseph Gire, also author of the famous Copacabana Palace, it launched the post-modern and vertical wave of architecture in the center of Rio, influenced by the architecture of the United States. Having fallen into disuse during all the years of abandonment of the centre of Rio, government agencies have now made it their home and it is not open to visitors.
