The Maracanã is the biggest soccer stadium. It is an institution, a museum and a part of Brazil's sporting history.

It is said that in Brazil, football(futebol) is a religion. So the Maracana is without doubt its greatest temple. It is both a stadium and an institution, a museum and a part of Brazil's sporting history. This place is full of vibrations(Brasil, Brasil) that you can hear during the guided tours or feel during the matches. We can only advise you to attend a football match at the Maracanã, the mythical stadium that hosts the Flamengo team, the biggest and most popular team in Rio and Brazil, but also the rival team of Fluminense. Flamengo's torcida (supporters' club) is reputed to be the hottest in the city, if not the country, and the spectacle in the stands is simply staggering!

Check the newspapers for upcoming matches (hopefully you'll be lucky enough to catch a clasico: Fla-Vasco, Fla-Flu, Fla-Botafogo...) and buy tickets directly from the Flamengo club headquarters. If you are a Flamengo fan, take the opportunity to buy a small camiseta rubro-negra (red and black jersey) at the beautiful club shop. Don't hesitate to go early to make the most of the rising atmosphere and the energy of the nação flamenguista (Flamengo nation!).

Renovated for the 2014 World Cup, the mythical stadium has been reduced to about 78,000 seats (down from 200,000 in the 1970s!). Guided tours are now organised, but it's best to attend a match to get a feel for the place!

We were lucky enough to catch a game Flamengo-fluminense in 2009 in this legendary stadium: feeling fort performed! Me which am not a large fan football, this experience remains one of my most beautiful memories of Rio: the atmosphere is indescribable! A small tip: no need to buy the most expensive places, the visibility is very good on the least expensive steps and the atmosphere is irrational! Another precision, we bought our tickets directly at the counter at the stadium
