The Rio Carnival is undoubtedly one of the world's best-known festive events, attracting millions of people.
It's one of the world's biggest and most spectacular carnivals, lasting 5 days. Rio is undoubtedly the most organized and best-known of these festivals, which originated in Europe in the Middle Ages. It officially lasts 5 days, from Friday evening to Mardi Gras. The high point of the 5-day festival is, of course, the parade of samba schools: the city's 12 best schools parade two nights in a row before 70,000 spectators on the terraces of avenue Marquês de Sapucai (Sambodrome). The best-value stands are in sectors 5, 7 and 9. Prices can vary from R$230 to almost R$1,000, depending on location and day.
In the Centro, don't miss the "Boitata"! The bloco concentrates on Praça XV, then wanders through the narrow streets of the old city center, followed by its faithful followers. Everyone is dressed up! This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful street carnival blocos. On Saturday mornings, in Cinelândia Square, the "Cordão da Bola Preta" gathers, Rio's biggest bloco, attracting hundreds of thousands of people.
Rehearsals. Carnival requires months of preparation. From December to the end of February, the samba schools hold ensaios técnicos, technical try-outs at the Sambodrome on Saturday and Sunday evenings in preparation for the show. A sort of free dress rehearsal. Pre-carnival is magical and spontaneous.
