In July 2016, in extremis before the Olympics, Line 1 of the VLT. (Veículo Leve sobre Trilhos), an ultra-modern tramway, was inaugurated between Rio's bus terminal (the Rodoviária Novo Rio) and Santos Dumont Airport, passing through the new Porto Maravilha and the great Avenida Rio Branco. Line 2, inaugurated in February 2017, connects Praça Formosa to Praça XV. It can be convenient for getting around the center, but it is not very fast. On the other hand, it is a fairly safe way to get around and enjoy Rio.
