Discover IBIZA - EIVISSA
Founded by the Carthaginians in the 7th century BC, then successively under Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Catalan domination, the town of Ibiza ("Eivissa" in Catalan) retains a rich heritage inherited from its various occupants. At the top of the hill, Dalt Vila (the upper town), built almost like a staircase, is surrounded by thick Renaissance walls from which emerge the cathedral and castle and, a little lower down, the church of Santo Domingo and numerous stately homes. This is undoubtedly the most interesting site on the island. At the foot of these walls are the old quarters, perhaps the most picturesque, where the old white fishermen's houses seem to crowd together in a haphazard fashion, stretching out towards the port. The further from Dalt Vila, the more recent the buildings. There are a number of good places to visit in the Marina Ibiza area.
