PALACIO DEL MARQUES

Ayacucho is pleased and honoured to present to visitors the oldest house in the Americas: Casa Velarde Alvarez. Built in 1550 by Indian workers, it maintains the marks of its manufacturers: stone wall and staircase leading from the patio to the floor, from Inca tradition, interior walls decorated with figures of sacred animals, pumas and snakes. It is currently the cultural centre of San Cristobal de Huamanga University. Friday and Saturday evening, often open access shows: recital, music, folklore.
