Ayacucho is pleased and honoured to present visitors with the oldest house in the Americas: Casa Velarde Alvarez. Built in 1550 by Indian workers, it bears the marks of its builders: a stone wall and staircase leading from the patio to the upper floor, in the Inca tradition, and interior walls decorated with figures of sacred animals, pumas and snakes. It is currently the centro cultural of the San Cristobal de Huamanga University. On Friday and Saturday evenings, there are often shows open to the public: recitals, music and folklore.
