This museum also rests on the foundations of an Inca palace, that of Huáscar. There are so many palaces in Cusco because each Inca who came to power had to build his own palace, both to mark the greatness of his reign and to be buried there when he made his journey to the afterlife. In addition to a carved stone door, Inca walls, and a double patio, all characteristics of the colonial casonas of Cusco, the Palacio del Almirante contains a monumental staircase with a lion and a demon carved on the stone. The space in itself is already worth the detour for an eye eager for architectural heritage.
This museum, very didactic, is rich of fabrics, mummies, pre-Inca and Inca ceramics, as well as paintings illustrating the history of the capital. The space called Mallki Wasi reconstitutes the ceremony that was given to the ancestors in their tombs. We learn more about the Inca way of life and the pillars that were agriculture and cattle breeding. There are also some pre-Columbian musical instruments, as well as a textile area where today's artists exhibit their skills inspired by the masters of yesteryear. The rooms are rather small and the objects are certainly exhibited, but without being staged or highlighted. The museum belongs to the National University of San Antonio Abad del Cusco and the exhibition has a rather classical and scholastic side, but it can be a useful visit before (or after) that of the sites.
