THE MORRO GRANDE

Half an hour's walk from the center of Velas, Morro Grande is the hill overlooking the town. It's an ideal spot from which to admire the bay and the panorama of the city, especially on a clear day. From up there, you can also contemplate the crater of the ancient volcano Morro Queimado or the sunset (probably one of the best times to go to Morro Grande), while Pico rises its majestic silhouette just opposite. If you've got 30 minutes to spare, take the plunge on this short hike, which has so much to offer.
