SÃO JORGE CHURCH

Erected in 1460 in accordance with the will of Infante Dom Henrique, it was rebuilt in the ^17th century and further modified in the ^18th. As a result, today's façade is not the same as it was then. Inside, a magnificent altarpiece, donated to the town by King Dom Sebastião in the ^16th century, is well worth a visit, as is the side altar with its beautiful coffered vaults and statues carved in lava stone. The upper choir houses a pipe organ built in 1865 by Tomé Gregório de Lacerda, uncle of composer Francisco Lacerda.
