Wines and spirits São Roque Do Pico

The local sweet wine "Czar" by José Duarte Garcia is part of the reputation of the Pico vineyards; much tasted, among others, by the Tsar of all the Russias. Hence the name. The particularity of this wine is linked to the morphology of the volcanic soil, the climate and the rigorous treatment of the vines. In 2009, one of the barrels turned to sugar, producing a wine unique in the world at 20.1°. Only 75 gold-engraved crystal bottles were made. The wine has won several medals, including a gold medal at the Moscow International Fair in 2011.

A guided tour of this large family distillery will tell you all about the liqueur-making process. Find out in advance so you can come along on the day of the traditional distillation and see the still in operation for yourself. Detailed explanations are followed by a tasting of the liqueurs and eaux-de-vie. The products are of the highest quality, and some have won awards, such as the blackberry and lemon liqueurs. And, of course, you can leave with a bottle or two of your own!
