RESERVATORIO DE AGUA DO ATALHO

Water was scarce on Graciosa, forcing its inhabitants to build structures to conserve it. They are unique in the archipelago, like this large water reservoir that supplied the town of Santa Cruz. Walk up Rua Miranda. In what looks like a large garden bordered by a low white wall, you'll find the access gate and the narrow staircase leading to the reservoir, where water once flowed up to the ceiling. The place isn't big, but it's well worth the detour.
