This fort was established by Governor Manuel Montiano in 1738 and was destroyed by an English attack in 1740
This fort was established by Governor Manuel Montiano in 1738. He was a pioneer in granting freedom and land to black slaves in the English colonies. The inhabitants of the fort helped those of Matanzas during the siege of Ogelthorpe. Fort Mose was destroyed by an English attack in 1740, and in 1752 a new fort was built next to the first one. A small museum in the Visitor Center tells the story of the destroyed fort. You can also go hiking and paddle boarding.
