VIA SACRA
A street used by the warlords during the triumphant parades in Rome.
The Sacred Way was used by triumphant warlords returning from their military campaigns. They all walked this road, followed by their troops. The Sacred Way climbed from the Capitoline Hill to the temple of the Capitoline Triad. To the west lies the Lapis Niger, a stele fenced off because it was considered evil. Legend has it that Romulus was killed here. Engraved on the stele (from right to left) is the oldest known Latin text (6thcentury BC). Under the Lapis Niger, an underground altar, perhaps an archaic temple dedicated to Vulcan.
