The Vatican Museums are a must for all visitors to Rome, with almost 7 kilometers of galleries and almost 1,400 rooms filled with works of art. There's no need to explain in detail that a complete visit to this extraordinary museum space - commissioned by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century - could easily occupy an entire day, but to discover the essentials of the collection, 3 or 4 hours might do the trick. The Sistine Chapel and Raphael's chambers are only accessible via a single passageway (to channel visitors).
To get into the museums, note above all that the queue is always very long, sometimes even reaching 2 or 3 hours: the Vatican Museums are visited by over 6 million people every year. To save time, remember to book your tickets online for a fixed time (you'll have to pay an additional booking fee of €5). Then go directly to the ticket office to collect your tickets.
