PORTA PIA
One of the most important gates of the Roman wall.
To the north of the city, providing access to the Nomentano district, Porta Pia is one of the most important gates in the Roman wall. It was erected 100 m from the old Nomentana gate by Pope Pius IV in 1564. Its interior façade was one of Michelangelo's last works. It was also through this gate that Garibaldi entered Rome on September 20, 1870. On that day, Italian artillery succeeded in breaching the wall, marking the end of the Papal State and the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy.
