Roman palace rich in history, seat of the Senate of the Italian Republic.
The Palazzo Madama is the seat of the Senate of the Italian Republic. Completed in 1505 by Cardinal Giovanni de' Medici, future Pope Leo X, the palace was designated the Roman seat of the de' Medici family, where the future Queen of France Catherine de' Medici often stayed. With the political decline of the Medici, the palace passed into the hands of the Habsburgs and the pontificate until 1837. Please note: at the time of updating this guide, the tours run by Senate staff that used to take place on the first Saturday of the month have been suspended.
