FONTANA DELLE TARTARUGHE
A beautiful fountain with bronze turtles in Rome.
Created from a design by Giacomo Della Porta in 1582, the Turtle Fountain was embellished by architect Taddeo Landini, who topped it with four bare ephebes. The four small bronze turtles were added by Le Bernin in 1658. In 1979, one of the turtles was stolen; the ones on display today are copies of the originals. Legend has it that Duke Mattei, having lost his fortune gambling, had the fountain built in a single night to prove to his future father-in-law that he was still capable of great achievements.
