VILLA MEDICI
A superb villa, the headquarters of the French Academy in Rome.
The Villa Medici is the headquarters of the Académie de France in Rome. Occupying the former gardens of the poet Lucullus, the 1st Renaissance-style building was erected in 1570 on the initiative of an Italian cardinal, before passing into the hands of the Medici family. The Académie de France in Rome was founded in 1666 by Louis XIV to promote France's cultural influence and enable French artists to spend time in Rome. In 1803, under Napoleon, the Academy moved to the Villa. Artists of all disciplines are still welcomed as boarders.
