Basilica built with the remains of the temples of the forum Holitorium, with the columns in the underground.
The Basilica of San Nicola in Carcere is built with the remains of the temples of the Holitorium forum. The nave corresponds to the central temple and the walls to the columns of the lateral temples. The whole building dates from the 11th century, the facade is from the 16th century. In the underground of the church are the remains of the columns of the Roman temples. We also see the base of the temple of Juno. The church is named after San Pietro in Carcere because, around the 6th century, there was a Byzantine prison in the area.
