Buses often run late (the fault of Rome's traffic jams!), while the metro works quite well but doesn't serve the whole city - there are only three lines. In the historic center, walk whenever possible. The ATAC website provides maps and a route planner. Applications such as Moovit are also very useful, providing real-time timetables.
