The Flemish merchant Jeanim Esmerandt landed in Madeira in the 15th century to produce and trade sugar. It turned out to be a juicy business! The Sugar City Museum displays the objects discovered by archaeologists in 1989 during excavations in the foundations of the Flemish merchant's former homes (which were located in Columbus Square). Sugar loaves (types of sugar moulds), Indo-Portuguese furniture, Japanese earthenware... We would have liked to learn a little more about the history of the sugar era, but that's not what the museum is about...
