It was built at the end of the 17th century at 111 m above sea level (ready to climb to the top to enjoy the beautiful panorama...). His role was to protect the bay from privateer attacks. At the beginning of the 20th century it became a centre of radio communications, hence its nickname Fortaleza do Pico. Surrounded by bucolic gardens, its enclosure, with its dark stone walls and various pavilions, is today occupied by the army.
