Adjacent to the Jesuit College, the church of St. John the Evangelist was founded by the Jesuits in the early 17th century. Its eight side chapels, carved woodwork and azulejos bear witness to the richness and influence of the order. The baroque style decoration is abundant in every corner of the building. Admire its sublime carved wooden high altar enhanced with gold (a typically Portuguese technique), the astonishing chapel with 11,000 Virgins and the sumptuous sacristy nestled behind the choir.
