The capital shines with light during these celebrations. The December 31 fireworks display is one of the biggest in the world!

Music, colours, flowers and garlands on every corner... From the beginning of December, Funchal is transformed into a city of light! People make sweets (including the bolo de mel), they set up their rabbitha (Christmas crib), and the Friday before Christmas, they celebrate the festival of the market dos Lavradores with songs. New Year's Day is the apotheosis of the festive season with its fireworks worthy of a fairy tale recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, in 2007, as the world's biggest fireworks show.
